Beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror we can barely endure, and we stand in awe of it because it coolly disdains to destroy us. Every angel is terrifying. -Rainer Maria Rilke

Every time I go looking for Rilke quotes, I am blown away anew. Every sentence is beautiful. Oh, to be so gifted. The title of this post is an excerpt from this. Give it a read, and if you like it, start browsing more writings. You won't be let down.

Reminiscent of the title quote is one from The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky: "The awful thing is that beauty is mysterious as well as terrible. God and the devil are fighting there and the battlefield is the heart of man.”
